The US could face trade challenges if it gives in to Canadian pressure and eases its ban on Canadian cattle and beef imports while continuing to ban beef products from other countries that have reported cases of mad cow disease, a US consumer group has said.

The US banned imports of cattle, beef and beef products from Canada after the country reported a single case of mad cow disease in Alberta in May.
The Washington-based consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has called on the US Department of Agriculture to maintain the ban on Canadian beef as it has on beef from other countries with mad cow disease.
“To select Canada for special treatment is to open the door to trade challenges from other countries with similarly small (mad cow) outbreaks,” the consumer group was quoted by Reuters as saying
The group said that Austria, Finland, Greece and Israel have each reported only a single case of mad disease, yet the US has maintained bans on beef imports from those countries, reported Reuters.
