Heinz has said that it will stop using Chinese milk following the discovery of traces of melamine in a baby food brand on sale in Hong Kong.

The company issued a “precautionary” recall of 270 cases of Heinz Intelligence Many Many Vegetable cereal in Hong Kong last week after local food safety authorities detected melamine, an industrial chemical, in the product.


“The melamine levels detected in one Heinz Hong Kong cereal product were 25 times lower than internationally-accepted safety levels,” a spokesperson for the US food giant told just-food today (1 October).


With the safety of the Chinese dairy supply chain under question after milk tainted with melamine sickened thousands of children, Heinz said that it will no longer use Chinese milk in its foods.


“In order to reassure consumers about the safety of Heinz products, Heinz has made the strategic decision to switch our milk supply in China and Hong Kong to non-Chinese sources and we are testing all dairy ingredients for melamine prior to use in our factories,” the spokesperson said.
