The number of deaths linked to the Maple Leaf Foods listeriosis outbreak has reached 19, it was announced on Friday (26 September).


The Public Health Agency of Canada said on its website that the additional death was reported in Quebec, the first confirmed death since 19 September.


To date, 14 deaths have been confirmed in Ontario, with two in British Columbia and one each in New Brunswick and Alberta. Five more deaths are currently under investigation by the health agency.


The Canadian food group restarted production at the facility at the centre of the recent listeria outbreak two weeks ago.


The outbreak, announced last month, has resulted in the recall of 191 Maple Leaf Foods products sold across the country.

The company said bacteria found in two of its slicing machines was most likely the cause of contamination.


Michael McCain, president of Maple Leaf Foods, told a news conference last week that experts have thoroughly sanitised the plant and all 84 slicing machines are now subject to “more stringent controls”.
