The company has become the second-largest grocery retailer in the Czech Republic with the acquisition of 146 Plus stores, which was cleared by regulators last month.

Rewe, which has also become the largest discount retailer in the country, agreed to sell off four stores to get the deal cleared but the company is now preparing plans to integrate the Plus network into its Czech business, which also includes the Penny discount stores.

“We haven’t decided the exact number of stores or when but the bottom line is that the majority of stores will be transferred into our Penny distribution network, while we are considering that a number of stores, up to 30, will be transferred to Billa supermarkets,” a spokesman told just-food today (12 September).

Rewe, which runs 181 Billa supermarkets in the Czech Republic, has said the acquisition of the Plus business will take its turnover in the country to EUR1.1nb (US$1.6bn).
