Wal-Mart is reportedly planning to roll out its new Marketside concept in southern California.
According to a report in the Financial Times, Wal-Mart has signed a lease for a 12,000 square foot site in downtown San Diego and applied for a licence to sell liquor at a small format store in Oceanside, a coastal location north of the city.
However, when contacted by just-food, the retailer declined to comment on the report.
“We currently trialling our smaller format Marketside stores. If the concept proves popular, we will roll them out in appropriate markets. Further announcements on store openings will be made in due course,” a spokesperson said.
Wal-Mart launched its Marketside stores in response to the incursion of UK-based retailer Tesco into the US market with its small-format Fresh & Easy outlets. The retailers are going head-to-head in the Arizona market.
