The European Commission said EU veterinary experts had made the decision after pigs in the northern province of Salta, which is close to the border with Bolivia and Paraguay, were found to have the disease.

Fresh beef exports from Salta and neighbouring Formosa have been banned.

Argentine authorities are carrying out an animal vaccination programme and have halted the transport of animals in an attempt to stop the spread of the highly contagious disease, reported Reuters.

“Meat from other regions of Argentina which are free of FMD can continue to be imported into the EU,” the European Commission said.
