The Czech Republic’s competition authority, the Office for Protection of Competition (UOHS), has conditionally approved Rewe Group’s acquisition of the Plus discount chain.
A spokesperson for UOHS told just-food today (26 August) that the deal has received approval provided Rewe sells four outlets.
“The acquisition will see Rewe become the second most dominant retailer nationally, behind Schwarz but ahead of Ahold and Tesco,” the spokesperson said. “Looking at local markets, the merger would have diminished competition in four areas. Rewe is required to sell one store in each of these regions.”
The Plus chain consists of 146 supermarkets throughout the Czech Republic.
Rewe currently operates 181 Billa supermarkets in the country.
