US doughnut maker Krispy Kreme is to open test stores in five outlets of US retail giant Wal-Mart by the end of October.

Krispy Kreme spokeswoman Robin Pfefferkorn said Wal-Mart “has a booming business, and we thought we would try to combine their market with our market.”

Krispy Kreme plans to open one full-service factory store in a Wal-Mart outlet in Mt Airy, North Carolina. Two doughnut-and-coffee shops are planned for Scottsburg, Indiana and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The company plans to open two smaller “fresh shops” in Wal-Mart stores in Christiansburg, Virginia and Seymour, Indiana. The “fresh shops” format has doughnuts delivered several times during the day from nearby factory stores.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
