The retailer said yesterday (23 September) that it had received notice from the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) that staff will embark on a “protected strike” from 7pm today, ending at midnight on Monday.
It is understood the 25,000 workers due to take part in the strike are demanding a 12% wage hike.
A spokesman for Pick n Pay said: “We would like to assure all our valued customers that we have put in place the necessary contingency plans in order to ensure that stores will continue to trade as normal during this period.”
Pick n Pay posted flat full-year earnings in April, warning that it expected difficult trading conditions in the following six months.
