Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin issued the initiative following a recall of oysters by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health.
The recall is of oysters from Area 6/Black Bay that were harvested from 12 March through 28 March. It applies to both shucked oysters and those in the shell. The action was taken as a result of illness associated with consumption of oysters from this area.
Louisiana epidemiologists are interviewing people who ate oysters from Area 6. Sixteen people have become ill after consuming oysters harvested from these waters. The symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps that last over a 24-hour period.
Citizens who have purchased any oysters from these areas should return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
