The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission was due to hand its report into competition in the grocery sector to the country’s treasury department today (31 July). The report’s findings are likely to be made public sometime next week, possibly Wednesday.

“Substantial leaks from the ACCC to certain media outlets suggest that the report will be controversial, at least in part,” National Association of Retail Grocers of Australia said this morning.

According to Australian reports, the ACCC is expected to propose around six major reforms. These are tipped to include the establishment of a grocery price-watch scheme, the introduction of unit pricing, changes to zoning laws to allow new entrants into areas designated for non-food retail and a ban on restrictive leases.

It has also been reported that, in order to address issues in the supply chain, the ACCC will propose regulations that make the profits farmers, wholesalers and retailers make on produce more transparent.
