Two of Japan’s top convenience store operators are expanding their lines of JPY100 (US$0.93) store-brand frozen foods.

Seven & i Holdings’ Seven-Eleven Japan and Lawson have both decided to edge in on Japan’s famous JPY100 shop territory with new additions to their inexpensive frozen ranges. The move comes in response to consumers who are looking to cut spending and represents an attempt to appeal to housewives and singles, the companies said.

The convenience retailers have launched these line extensions despite the slump in frozen food sales in Japan following a scare over imported frozen food from China. Nevertheless, Seven-Eleven’s frozen-food sales in June rose 20% on the year according to the company

Seven & i Holdings will double its line up of JPY100 frozen foods to six products starting from this week.

Lawson, meanwhile, will start selling all five of its JPY100 products nationwide. This range was previously only available in southern Japan.
