Asda, owned by supermarket chain Wal-Mart, saw its home shopping grocery sales jump by 71.8% for the 12 weeks to 15 June, compared to the same period last year, according to figures from TNS Worldpanel, The Independent reported today (28 July).

Although good news for Asda, the figures are still dwarfed by market leader Tesco who continues to be the UK’s number one online retailer by far.

According to reports, Sainsbury’s grew online sales by just 17.3% over the same 12-week period.

“We’re very happy with the growth that we have had in the last year and by the end of the year we’ll be nationwide so it’s all part of that plan,” a spokesperson for Asda told just-food. “I think our position is a result of our delivery costs being lower, the quality of service and great availability as online shopping becomes available in more areas.”

Sainsburys has suffered technical problems with its online grocery site since mid-June, but the figures relate to before the problems.

Asda has plans to relaunch its website on a new platform in the Autumn in a bid to ramp up online sales and offer customers an online grocery and non-food shopping experience.
