Discount retailers Aldi and Lidl continue to gain share of a growing UK grocery market, according to figures out today (22 July).

The retailers saw sales grow by 20% to 14% respectively during the 12 weeks to 13 July, research analysts TNS said.


Discounters now account for 5.9% of the UK grocery market – a record – although that is still way behind the levels seen in France and Germany.


UK grocery sales as a whole climbed 7%, TNS said, fuelled partly by rising food prices.


Among the UK’s “Big Four”, Morrisons and Asda saw sales rise 9%, while Tesco’s sales climbed 7% and sales at Sainsbury’s increased 6%, TNS said.

On a separate not, TNS said food inflation in the UK reached 5.8% during the 12 weeks to 15 June.
