Authorities in the Czech Republic have banned imports of cattle, beef and beef products from Slovakia because of concerns over BSE.

Josef Holejsovsky, the director of the Czech Veterinary Administration, told the national radio programme Radiozurnal that concerns over rising cases of BSE within Slovakia’s domestic cattle herd prompted the ban.
“Our attitude towards Slovakia, that is our willingness to sanction imports of beef from this country, was more than benevolent, which was in marked contrast to our attitude to EU countries in this respect,” Holejsovsky said: “That is why we have decided to ban imports of beef, cattle and, naturally, beef products from Slovakia.
“I believe it ought to be resolved within two months.”
The ban came into effect today [Thursday].
