They will be vetted through government agencies, such as the Agency for Healthcare Quality Research, relying on consumer and scientific studies. The FDA says it wants consumers to be making more informed choices.

The agency says it will also further promote scientifically-based health claims it has already approved, such as the benefits of foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, five-to-nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables and replacing solid fats high in saturated fat and trans-fats with vegetable oils containing unsaturated fats.
