Canadian grocery retailer Loblaw is to close its Halifax distribution centre on 9 October.

Loblaw said yesterday (12 August) that the move is an effort to simplify its distribution network and reduce excess capacity in the Atlantic region. The closure is part of Loblaw’s “long-term vision to improve service to stores”, the company added.

The distribution centre currently employs 115 staff and the company said it is exploring the potential for alternative employment for as many staff as possible.

It said the centre being closed is almost 25% smaller than its nearby Lakeside distribution site, which will continue to operate.

“This was a difficult decision. This move is not a reflection of the management team or our colleagues. We thank and appreciate our colleagues for their dedication and service,” said Julija Hunter, Loblaw vice president of public relations.
