Fonterra has appealed against Sumatra Tobacco Company’s use of the Angkor brand in New Zealand because of its similarity to the dairy group’s Anchor brand.

Sumatra uses the Angkor name to market cigarettes in Southeast Asia. The Indonesian group is seeking to register a “wordmark” for the brand name in New Zealand to cover a wide range of products, including a non-dairy creamer.

According to local reports, Fonterra subsidiary NZ Milk Brands has opposed the move because of its similarity to Anchor.

A Fonterra spokesperson told the Dominion Post that the imported brand was “too close to our iconic brand”.

The case is scheduled to be heard in the High Court in August.
