Upmarket UK grocer Waitrose has booked an increase in sales for the first half of the year.

For the first 26 weeks of the year, the retailer generated sales of GBP90.4m (US$144.5m), an 11.5% increase on a year earlier.

In the 26th week, total sales at Waitrose were 9.3% higher than last year, driven by sales of “warm weather treats” and fruit and vegetables.

Sales of side salads rose by 50% following the introduction of garden, Italian and rainbow salads, and sales of melons and pineapples grew by 32%.

Last month, Waitrose announced plans for a sixfold increase in the number of stores that stock its food products and aims to nearly double the number of outlets it operates within five years.
