French retailer Carrefour has opened its first Carrefour Express convenience store in China.

The store has been opened in Beijng’s central Fuguiyuan district and will be run as a test format, Carrefour China spokesman Chen Bo told just-food.

“At the moment we cannot say anything about future store rollout,” he added.

Carrefour said the new convenience format, covering 4,700 square metres, fills a gap in Fuguiyuan for fresh foods. Food makes up two thirds of the store’s 30,000 products and 80% of space is devoted to fresh foods.

“Carrefour provides a favourable shopping environment and offers quality, medium-priced goods suited to local tastes,” the company said.

The prices of some fresh goods are lower than those sold in traditional wet markets, the retailer claims.

Carrefour already operates 112 hypermarkets and 283 discount stores in China.

Carrefour previously opened eight Champion convenience stores in Beijing in 2004 but closed them two years later.
