The ketchup-maker has said that it will also reduce packaging by 15%, improve the efficiency of its transportation network to cut emissions by 10% and reduce water usage by 20%.

CEO Bill Johnson said Heinz is developing new ways to reduce its environmental impact.

“From using potato peels to generate energy, to reducing the amount and size of our packaging, every day we’re finding new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and improve the efficiency of our company,” Johnson said.

At its plant in Ontario, Oregon, Heinz has revealed that it is developing a method to convert potato peelings into biofuel. The company plans to distribute and sell that fuel through a central natural gas pipeline.

The company also plans to treat and recycle 90% of the water used for daily potato production at the same plant, which could save a billion gallons of water per year.
