Food inflation in France is quickening, according to the latest government figures.

Food price rises in France for the year to April outstripping previous years’ increases.

Figures published by the finance ministry fraud unit, the DGCRRF, show a 7% rise in retailer value-brand prices, a 5% rise in private-label foods and 4.5% lift in national brand prices during the 12 months to April.

French household expenditure on food in 2007 rose by 2.9% year-on-year, increasing to EUR149bn (US$234.6bn). This compares with growth of 2% in 2006, according to figures released this week by the government statistics office INSEE.

Food prices are a recurring political hot potato and will be back on the agenda when the French parliament discusses a fresh law to modernise the economy in June.
