Representatives of the UK’s food retailers and manufacturers will meet today (22 May) with Chancellor Alistair Darling to address rising food prices, a spokesperson for the Treasury has confirmed.

Senior executives from the UK’s largest supermarkets, the British Retail Consortium and the National Farmers’ Union, among others, will meet to discuss the growing problem of souring food prices.
“The Chancellor is meeting with representatives of interested parties. These meetings are closed and we currently giving out no further information,” the Treasury told just-food.
Darling signalled his concern about rising food prices in a recent letter to the EU’s finance ministers. “Rising global food and energy prices are increasing inflationary pressures across the world economy, hitting poorer households the hardest and threatening to reverse the progress we have made over the past few years in reducing poverty,” he wrote.
