UK organic farming minister Elliot Morley yesterday (Tuesday) chaired the first meeting of the Organic Food and Farming Action Plan stakeholders’ forum.


The Organic Food and Farming Action Plan was one of several new measures launched at the recent Downing Street meeting on sustainable food and farming, following the publication of Sir Don Curry’s Policy Commission report on the Future of Food and Farming.


The forum is composed of major stakeholders in the organic food and farming chain. Its terms of reference are: “To advise the Government, by the end of July 2002, on how we can create a sustainable and competitive organic food and farming sector by –


*Identifying ways of achieving sustainable growth in the organic farming sector


*Increasing our share of the market for organic produce

Morley said the Action Plan would help UK farmers respond effectively to the growing demand for high quality organic food. He welcomed the support the plan had received from all sectors of the industry.


Farmers, processors, supply chain members and retailers could all help to make the UK’s organic sector become more successful and sustainable, he added.
