Canadian retailer Sobeys is planing to grow its new FreshCo format, with “dozens” of openings planned for the coming months.

A spokesperson for Sobeys told just-food that the company will be looking to roll out the format in Ontario, by remodelling some of its Price Chopper stores, as well as seeking new outlets in the region.

The new discount format will feature “low, low prices without all the usual deep discount store trade-offs”, president and CEO Bill McEwan said.

“FreshCo offers customers a larger selection of quality products in a refreshingly different, modern and clean environment that is not typical of discount grocery stores,” McEwan added.

The outlets will offer a greater selection of fresh products, including local produce, baked goods, cheeses and a two tier selection of meat. It will offer speciality products tailored to outlet catchment areas as well as gluten and lactose-free products, which are not typically offered by discount stores.

The company has already opened eight outlets and has described the investment into the new format as “significant”.
