Federalimentare, the Italian food sector body, has called for a number of measures to reinvigorate the country’s EUR113bn (US$175bn) food industry.
“While we have growing exports of ‘Made in Italy’ foods, production is not increasing. Food makers have been held back by rising costs and poor demand at home,” a spokesperson for the trade group told just-food.
The industry group presented economic information at a food sector convention in Parma yesterday (6 May).
The last year has been “difficult” for the Italian food industry with domestic consumption falling 1.5% and production costs increasing 9.8%, Federalimentare said in a statement.
It said that while food exports increased 7% last year to ensure the growth of the sector, the new government must take steps to increase food safety and simplify legislation on food.
