US cereal giant General Mills, in partnership with the American Dietetic Association, has awarded US$500,000 in grants to community-based organisations across the US to promote healthy eating in kids.

The initiative provides 50 grants of $10,000 each to nonprofits, schools and community organisations to develop ways to help children of all ages incorporate nutrition and physical fitness into their daily lives, the group said yesterday (22 June).

“Continuing to raise awareness of the importance of increased physical activity and good nutrition for all our youth is so important,” said Ellen Goldberg Luger, executive director of the General Mills Foundation. “We believe these programmes provide a foundation of learning to help our youth and their families enjoy the long-lasting benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”

Now in its eight year, the Champions for Healthy Kids initiative is a partnership of the General Mills Foundation, the American Dietetic Association Foundation, and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness.

The programme offers students, with the help of schools, an opportunity to learn about all aspects of nutrition along with ideas on changes in home and school environments that can increase awareness about the importance of eating nutritious foods.

Since 2002, General Mills said it has invested around $19.5m in youth nutrition and fitness programmes.
