An expanded production capacity will enable Friesland to respond more effectively to the demand for products used in infant nutrition.

“Going forward, we are concentrating on growing our milk and whey ingredients business, where we see a lot of potential,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food. “This is why we have invested in upgrading our facility in Bedum.”

The company has said that worldwide demand for functional food ingredients, including those used in infant nutrition, is growing dramatically.

“By increasing its production capacity in Bedum, Friesland Foods Domo is responding to the growing market for infant nutrition. This makes our production site in Bedum the whey demineralisation centre of Friesland Foods,” Roelof Joosten, managing director of Friesland ingredients arm Friesland Foods Domo, said.

At the whey demineralisation centre, where the Deminal 90 brand is manufactured, salts are removed from the whey by means of ion exchange.

“In the past few years, Friesland Foods Domo has made enormous strides in the development, technology and production of high-quality ingredients based on milk and whey. The production site in Bedum only makes this speciality for infant nutrition,” Joosten added.

Friesland last week announced plans to merge with fellow Netherlands-based dairy group Campina.
