The European Commission has again backed its target for biofuels production despite growing concerns over rising food prices.
The Commission has laid out plans for 10% of all vehicle fuel in the EU to come from biofuels by 2020.
The target is part of a wider directive for renewable energy sources to account for a fifth of all energy consumption by 2020.
The target has caused concern from some quarters of the food industry that competition for grains has led to inflated food prices.
However, an agricultural spokesperson for the Commission told just-food that it does not believe this will present “too great a problem”.
