A Chinese court has ruled in favour of Italian confectioner Ferrero and imposed a fine on a domestic manufacturer that sold imitation Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
The Beijing Supreme Court fined Montresor (Zhangjiagang) Food CNY500,000 (US$71,413) and ordered the company to introduce new packaging for its chocolate products.
“We are happy that after four years in the Chinese courts we have been able to protect our product image,” a spokesperson for the Italian chocolatier told just-food.
However, the company added that it would “wait and see” whether this judgement would be successfully enforced.
According to local reports, Montresor claimed to have designed its packaging independently in 1990. The company reportedly said it had not seen a Ferrero Rocher before 1993.
