Melton Mowbray pork pies are due to be given the status of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) by the EU.

This means that at least one stage of production must take place in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Furthermore, products granted PGI status benefit from a “good reputation”, the EU said.
The move has been welcomed by Melton Mowbray pork pie manufacturer Chappell’s Fine Foods.
“We are thrilled by the news. This reflects what a unique and special product we make,” a spokesperson for Chappell’s told just-food.
The PGI status will be awarded by 4 October this year.
