This means that at least one stage of production must take place in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Furthermore, products granted PGI status benefit from a “good reputation”, the EU said.

The move has been welcomed by Melton Mowbray pork pie manufacturer Chappell’s Fine Foods.

“We are thrilled by the news. This reflects what a unique and special product we make,” a spokesperson for Chappell’s told just-food.

The PGI status will be awarded by 4 October this year.
