Tesco and Carrefour today (21 May) moved to play down any impact the anti-government protests in Thailand have had on the retail giants’ local stores.

A spokesman for Tesco, which has over 600 outlets in Thailand, said a “few stores” in central Bangkok had been “impacted” but insisted the effect on the business was “minimal”.

“A few stores in central Bangkok were impacted by the disturbances but most of these have now reopened,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Carrefour, which has 40 stores in the country, said that “for the moment” none of the French retail giant’s stores were closed.
