Indian dairy group The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is to take over the management of the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union (WAMUL) milk co-operative in Guwahati for a period of five years.
The deal was reached after negotiations between NDDB, WAMUL and the Assam state government.
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, NDDB chairman Amrita Patel, Gautam Bora, Assam minister for cooperation and cultural affairs, and NDDB managing director Deepak Tikku signed the agreement.
The NDDB is expected to revive the financially weakened 26-year-old WAMUL, which was on the verge of closure, having been “declared sick” five years ago.
The Assam state government had decided to hand over the ailing WAMUL to NDDB in 2004, but the proposal remained on paper till now.
