The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has halted production at Castleberry’s Food Co. plant in the US state of Georgia.

The FDA has suspended a temporary operating permit that had allowed the site to stay open, according to Castleberry’s owner, the Canada-based Connors Bros Income Fund.

The fund said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) had notified Castleberry’s that it was withholding inspection at the Augusta unit until the questions with the FDA had been resolved.

Connors Bros Income Fund said that Castleberry’s was working closely with the FDA and the USDA to address any possible concerns regarding operations at the plant.

It said that the company plans to meet with the agencies this week and expects “a prompt resolution” to the issue, enabling the plant to begin production within one to two weeks.

The fund added that it expects “minimal service disruption” to customers.

In July, the FDA issued a warning regarding a botulism contamination at the Augusta facility, which resulted in extensive product recalls.

The initial recall followed two incidents of botulism poisoning involving four people but the recall was later expanded to include all products.

The plant re-opened in September under the temporary FDA permit just suspended.
