Most of the price rises seen in February average less than 1%, but they take standardised food prices to almost 20% above the index figure set in 1998.

The price rises are less dramatic than those published at the end of February by French consumer magazine 60 Million Consumers.

In its March issue, the magazine published a table of just over 1,000 supermarket prices, claiming that basic items such as pasta and yogurt had risen by between 5% and over 40%.

The magazine’s claims were investigated by the French trading standards agency DGCCRF, which found significant differences between store prices and those published by the magazine.
