China Mengniu Dairy swung back into the black in 2009 after turning around its business in the wake of the 2008 melamine contamination scandal.

For 2009, the company earned CNY1.12bn (US$164m) compared to a loss of CNY949m in 2008.

Revenue during the year increased by 7.7% to CNY25.71bn.

“The China dairy industry experienced a full recovery and growth in 2009. As a result, consumer confidence was retrieved and enhanced while consumer sentiment towards dairy products rapidly resumed,” the firm said in its earnings statement.

In July 2009, Mengniu secured capital injection from Chinese oil and food enterprise COFCO, and private equity fund Hopu Investment Management.

The group said the investment would enable it to develop its food safety control system.
