Sales of Fairtrade products soared 81% in the UK last year, with bananas the most popular item, according to the latest figures.

Sales reached GBP493m (US$971m), the Fairtrade Foundation said today (25 February). Banana sales more than doubled to GBP150m.
The figures, announced today to coincide with the beginning of Fairtrade Fortnight, showed sales increasing by 40% year-on-year since 2002.
“After years of chipping away, Fairtrade supporters are finally beginning to make some significant impression on the way companies trade,” said Harriet Lamb, executive director of the Fairtrade Foundation.
