Spending on organic food reached some DKK4.2bn (US$830.4m) in 2007, equating to 5.5% of all food bought in Denmark last year.
Organic milk was the clear best-seller, according to the data from the Danish Department of Agriculture, with almost half of all milk bought carrying the green “organic label”.
“Organic has the small food grower image, but now that large food groups like Arla are investing more heavily, this image is changing and very fast,” said Paul Holmbeck, CEO of Okologisk Landsforening, Denmark’s national organic products association.
According to a second report from ACNielsen, sales of organic food could leap by a further 40% this year.
