Vion has been named as one of three possible suitors for Grampian, alongside Brazil-based meat giant Sadia and US private equity firm CCMP.

A possible sale of the Scottish firm, the UK’s biggest poultry producer, has been rumoured for months.

Officials at Grampian could not be reached for comment as just-food went to press. Vion, which is looking to expand its business outside the meat sector, refused to be drawn on the speculation.

“We are always on the look-out for possible acquisitions but we never comment on anything going on on the level of acquisitions or takeovers,” a Vion spokesman said.

The UK is Vion’s third-largest market behind the Netherlands and Germany but the spokesman declined to comment on whether the Dutch firm was eyeing the market for potential acquisition targets.

Officials at Sadia were also unavailable for comment. International expansion is seen as a key growth strategy for the Brazilian firm, which highlighted its ambitions to grow overseas when it announced its 2007 results last month.

“Going international and the growth in the domestic market are congruent with our strategic objective of growing revenues two times in five years,” Sadia chairman Walter Fontana Filho said.
