Kings Supermarkets has appointed Supervalu Inc executive Judy Spires president and chief executive.

Spires will replace Bruce Weitz, who has headed up the company since 2006.

Previously, Spires has held various positions at Supervalu-owned Acme Markets, where she started out as a clerk in 1970. She was named president of Acme in 2006.

“Judy Spires is a seasoned food retail executive with an impressive track record of success in virtually every area of the store and management,” Jim Demme, chairman of Kings, said.

Weitz is leaving to pursue other interests. However, he will retain a stake in the 25-store chain, Kings said.

“I would also like to thank Bruce Weitz for the commitment and passion he exhibited in leading the company over the past four years,” Demme said. “I support Bruce’s decision to pursue other endeavours and am pleased that he will remain a major shareholder going forward.”
