The initiative, jointly developed by trade body the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and green consultants Envirowise, could save 140m litres of water per day – and save business around GBP60m (US$119m) a year on water bills.
The FDF said the pledge would help the industry meet its target of cutting water use, outside of that embedded in products themselves, by 20% by 2020.
The scheme forms part of the FDF’s five-point plan, first announced last October, to tackle the impact food and drink producers have on climate change.
FDF director of sustainability and competitiveness Callton Young said: “Last October, FDF chose to be bold about the environment by targeting priorities where we can make the biggest difference through collective action. Today’s signing of the commitment by many of our largest member companies is an important demonstration of their desire to reduce the environmental impacts of our sector through the widespread adoption of water efficiency best practice.”
