The company said the Mrs Smiths facility in Spartanburg is due to close in March with the loss of 525 jobs.
Staff were told yesterday (17 January) that the site is to close, a move Schwan senior vice president Bill McCormack said was due to the company’s need to be “more efficient as it faces global competition”.
Production will be consolidated at other Schwan manufacturing facilities in the US and McCormack said the company will offer employees positions at other plants, or help them obtain other jobs.
The Spartanburg facility has been part of the Schwan’s manufacturing and dessert division since the company acquired Mrs Smiths in 2003. The facility produces speciality dessert products including cream pies and cakes.
