UK organic dairy Omsco has moved to play down reports that the deep freeze in the country had hampered its ability to supply customers.

It was feared that over 100,000 litres of organic milk would have to be dumped as a result of the poor weather, although the co-op said its tanker drivers had made “heroic efforts” in the last 48 hours to collect milk from farms.


Omsco chief operating officer Huw Bowles admitted the company’s supplies had suffered amid the coldest weather the UK had seen in 30 years but he insisted the whole sector had suffered.


“Unfortunately we have not been able some milk but we are no different from other milk groups in this respect,” Bowles told just-food today (8 January).
 
“There are no issues regarding supplies to customers or consumers and the amount of milk involved, although a large number, is quite a small proportion of the total.”
