US food maker JM Smucker has recalled batches of peanut butter amid concerns the products could be contaminated with salmonella.

Smucker said yesterday (17 November) that no-one had fallen ill from the products, which were sold in 25 states across the US. However, it said it was recalling the peanut butter out of “an abundance of caution for consumer safety”.

Smucker is recalling 16-ounce jars of its Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky with production codes of 1307004 and 1308004. The products have a best-if-used-by dates of August 3, 2012 and August 4, 2012.

The company said the peanut butter would have been bought between 8 and 17 November and urged consumers that purchased the products to discard them immediately.

It also said the affected peanut butter was the chunky product and not creamy.

Smucker, meanwhile, also announced its second-quarter results yesterday. The company’s profits fell 15% amid higher commodity prices and costs linked to the sale of its Europe’s Best business, restructuring programmes and M&A. Smucker also lowered its forecast for annual earnings per share.
