The total number of people who have died from the cantaloupe listeria outbreak in the US has reached 29, making it the largest food-borne outbreak in US history.

The outbreak was detected last month and linked to cantaloupes from Jensen Farms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said 139 people have been infected with listeria, resulting in 29 deaths. The ages of the deceased ranged from 48 to 96 years, with an average age of 81.

According to the CDC, the outbreak is the worst since a 1985 outbreak, linked to Mexican-style cheese in Los Angeles and Orange County. It infected 142 people, resulting in 28 deaths and 20 miscarriages.
