US regional retailer Wegmans Food Markets is recalling 5,000 lbs of Turkish pine nuts after they were linked to a multi-state outbreak of salmonella.
The recall applies to Turkish pine nuts sold in bulk at most of the retailer’s stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland between 1 July and 18 October. Other pine nuts sold at Wegmans are not affected by this recall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday (27 October) reported that the outbreak has affected 42 people throughout New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Arizona and Maryland. People first became ill in mid-August and two patients were hospitalised, according to the CDC. No deaths have been linked to the outbreak.
A statement from the CDC said: “The bulk Turkish Pine Nuts have been linked to an outbreak of illness from Salmonella Enteritidis, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
Wegmans has placed automated phone calls to customers who purchased the Turkish pine nuts alerting them about the recall.
The CDC advised consumers who have purchased this product that they should discard any that remain in their homes.
