Croatian food producer and retailer Agrokor today (6 October) refused to speak about its rumoured interest in buying Slovenia-based retailer Mercator.

Local media in Slovenia have reported that Agrokor plans to offer EUR221 (US$294.8) per share for the retailer, but when a spokesperson was contacted by just-food they refused to confirm or deny the report.

“Unfortunately at this stage we can not comment on anything related to the Mercator transaction”, they said.

In March, Mercator said it had received a letter from Agrokor in which the Croatian firm expressed an interest in a “strategic combination” and wanted to start talks.

Eleven owners of Mercator, among them beverage producer Pivovarna Lasko and Slovenia’s largest bank Nova Ljubljanska Banka NLB, put 50.03% of Mercator up for sale in September with a deadline for bids of 17 October.

Shares in Mercator dropped 1.53% to 161 at 12:19 BST.
