Wal-Mart Stores has set up a management team to develop its operations in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The world’s largest retailer, which is growing its business in Canada, owns Asda, the UK’s second-largest retailer, and has just expanded into Africa, has named executive David Cheesewright as president and CEO of the unit.

Cheesewright, who joined Wal-Mart in 1999 when he took a role at Asda, moves his position from president and CEO of the US retail giant’s operations in Canada.

Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart’s international operations, said Europe, the Middle East and Africa “held tremendous potential” for the retailer.

Cheesewright’s role in Canada will be taken by Shelley Broader, chief merchandising officer of its operations in the country. Broader joined Wal-Mart last year from US retailer Michael’s where she was president and COO.
