British grocer Tesco already controls 14 hypermarkets and 33 supermarkets in Poland. However, this year the company plans to create another 3000 jobs with the construction of four new hypermarkets in the country.

French retailer Carrefour has meanwhile pinpointed Warsaw, Gdansk and Krakow as locations for three to four new hypermarkets to be built this year. This, and the addition of another ten to 12 supermarkets to the Carrefour chain, means that the company is predicting turnover of PlZ3.5bn (US$871m) for 2002.

Lastly, German giant Metro has already invested PlZ2.9bn in Poland, of which PlZ450m was spent last year to open ten retail outlets across the country. A spokesperson told local Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita that further investment plans are in place.
