Following a victory by Peru at the World Trade Organisation, the EU has struck a deal with Lima, that will allow products viewed by Brussels as ‘sardine-type’ fish to be sold in Europe as ‘sardines’, but “joined together with the scientific name of the species….in a clear and distinct manner.”

As a result Peruvian sardines will appear in EU supermarkets as ‘sardines- sardinops melanosticus’ for instance. Brussels only recognises ‘sardina pilchardus’ as a true sardine. These fish will continue to be simply sold as ‘sardines’.
